   Summary Author: Kathleen Rene Kiefer

Soap Lake, seen above, is the last lake in a series that's
nestled between basalt cliffs that form the Lower Grand Coulee
of Washington State. Carved over thousands of years by the successive
floods of Glacial Lake Missoula, the cliffs to the north of the
lake are dramatic evidence of the power of the great floods. Soap Lake
is meromictic with two permanent and stable layers. The bottom is
hypersaline, sulfuric and cold, while the top is an anaerobic
brine similar to seawater. The lake is approximately 2 square miles
(5.2 sq km) in area and 70 feet (21 m) deep at its deepest point. Photo
   taken October 20, 2020.
