 Sherwin Lakes, California

   Summary Author: Cindy Todd

Sherwin Lakes Trailhead is less than 3 miles (4.8 km) from the town
of Mammoth Lakes (about 7,880 feet or 2,400 m) in California's
Eastern Sierra Nevada. The trail itself is about a 4.5-mile (7.2
km) hike round-trip. The average elevation is around 8,270 feet (2,520
m). It's a beautiful hike, due in part to the towering conifers and
scenic views of Long Valley Caldera in the distance. For me, the
sunrise reflection on Sherwin Lakes of the mountain in the background
   was especially enticing (shown above).
This is one of the most volcanically active areas of the contiguous
United States. For example, the numerous hot springs are all heated
by volcanic activity. In fact, the town of Mammoth Lakes sits within
the Long Valley Caldera which was created by an eruption
approximately 760,000 years ago. Today, you'll find obsidian,
basalt, pumice, tuff, rhyolite and more all around the
   area.
