Finally! I've now liberated this machine to be my very own personal workstation. With 128G of ecc ddr4 ram it makes it perfect for creating and exploiting ramdisks for building toolchains as opposed to using disks. Not the fastest machine here but by far the most capable.

Sheesh. I wish I could get my hands on that much ram, without having a mortgage payment to aquire it!

Alas, the 32G in my server and another 32G in my gaming rig are going to have to suffice for the time being.

ddr5 so-dimm in this case. No ramdisks but it definetly can take care of itself. My rule of thumb these days is at least 2G per penguin makes for a capable system for development. In this case that only leaves me roughly 8G for chrootable ramdisk which is enough for me. However the epyc based system has almost 100G of ddr4 ecc ram to spare which makes it leader of the pack in this neck of the woods. As of yesterday I managed to liberate it for my personal evil, demented purposes. It has become personal. :-)

I already do. However, those things are keeping my trade (ironworkers) veeeeery busy these days. Still not busy enough to encourage me to buy ram at this point, however, prices seem to be leveling off and coming back down to a more 'sane' category. Nothing like it was, though.. and probably never will be.

My youngest is in the "affordable" home construction trade and reports the same for that industry.

Onboard graphics? Usually seperate graphics cards have been using ddr5 for ages now.

I have one of those as well. However it takes more power and space for my liking which is why I bought the epyc in the first place. Far less power consumption and far more capable than the ddr3 system.

While my processor has onboard graphics (Intel UHD graphics 630), I've never used it. I have an Auros RTX 3060 12gb. ddr5 ram has only been around since 2020. I probably built my gaming machine around that time, or maybe just before since my processor was released in 2018. I went with ddr4 either because ddr5 wasn't out yet, or was very new and outrageously expensive at the time. Still is, even.

I imagine when my server ever starts having issues, I'll probably just go with a mini PC to replace it. Plenty of horsepower, very low power consumption, and a lot better priced than server hardware. Only issue would be longevity (they don't last nearly as long as server hardware, and storage, as most of them don't come with more than 1tb but are usually upgradable.

Granted, I tend to plan ahead for things that never happen.. at the moment my current server has 4tb (8tb in a raid 1), and I'm currently probably using less than 100gb of it. I got rid of a lot of unneeded stuff, and don't hoard movies/TV shows/music any more. :)

(Intel UHD graphics 630)

The only intel here at the moment shows UHD Graphics 620. ddr4 so-dimm. It claimed to be able to handle 64G total but couldn't get it to boot with more than 32G. However, by my rule of thumb, the penguins only need 16G (2 x 8) so that leaves 16G for ramdisk(s). I figure 2 8G ramdisks would be the way to go but have yet to try it. This one is replacing the epyc as of yesterday so I haven't gotten around to it. As for ddr4 so-dimm I have two matched pairs of 64G that currently look to be collecting dust for a lack of a suitable motherboard, probably mini-itx. I doubt there is a laptop that can handle 64G, especially considering they only have a single slot. Also I hate to break up matched pairs.

I'll probably just go with a mini PC to replace it.

The epyc has 4 2tb hotswappable 3.5" sata spinney drives as we speak. I haven't bothered with raid and have no plans to although I could. Also I think it could handle 4tb drives if needed, perhaps bigger. The intel, which I am using to reply to you, has 8 hotswappable sata ports, but am anly using four 2.5" flash disks - or whatever the kids are calling them these days - and only one of them is 1tb.
